    Hola, Hola Carrie -
Love that I was part of a poolside chat in Tennessee! (Thought my ears were burning earlier today but I attributed it to soccer fun in the heat of Florida.)
As always it’s so much fun to read your bilingual blogging fun!

Oh, this is just an amazing post from your amazing bilingual Cuban American brain! :)

Seriously, it’s great. I have just been inspired by you to start using more Portuguese words in my blog. I started in my latest post and I included I link to your blog! :)

It’s very interesting to read this because only now, after living here in the U.S. for 11 years, after my husband received his job offer (we’re still waiting for his visa to be processed) that I began to see myself as an immigrant. It takes time, a very long time for that to sink in for me. I came to this country as a student (I’m still on a student VISA)… things were much easier for me from the beginning because I was fully fluent in English (I have nearly no accent) and knew the culture. Psychologically and socio-politically, though, I didn’t feel like an immigrant.

OK, sorry for all this verbiage, forgive me, I’ve been finishing my Ph.D. dissertation and writing lots and lots lately. I’ll continue this in a blog post sometime in the future. Thanks for writing an inspiring post, though! :)

Thank you for sharing this story. When I speak Spanish to my children in public, I have, on multiple occassions, received the opposite response — that is, criticism either overt (like the time someone actually said to me, “You should speak English to them!” to the more covert looks. But I continue to do so because I know how important it is for my children. Your posting today reminded me that the ability to speak multiple languages truly is something special and we should be proud of it!

Thanks. I worried (after I hit publish) that I sounded a bit overly pissy. I’m not. Well, I sort of am. The fear thing makes me crazy. Especially here in a Red state prepping for local and national elections…I do have to hand it to my Tennessee neighbors though, I often get compliments and “Oh, I wish” when people hear Maria and me when we’re out. Not that I don’t have stories about misunderstanding and ridiculousness, but mostly, it’s been high fives when it comes to the bilingual kid.

    Carrie,
I usually get the puzzled, “but you don’t have an accent!”
As if having an accent, like skin color, or place of birth would make it easier to identify us as aliens.
But, I can DO a great accent . . but only if you say por favor. =D

Some times people have to have a positive experience to like different things/people. I read your blog and your negative tone about other people and their feelings about people. No matter what country we are from, or what language we speak I think we are all the same. We do not like people to judge us because of our differences. Be happy with who you are and with what you are doing. That is all we can do in this life to help others understand us.

Anon, I am thinking about what you said. Thanks.

I don’t get freaked out over immigration; I get freaked out over illegal immigration. I don’t have a single problem with anyone who comes to this country legally. I welcome them; I welcome their skills; I welcome their desire to become part of this country. I myself am a descendent of immigrants (as are almost all of us here). But I don’t welcome those who break our laws to come here any more than their countries would welcome me if I crossed their borders illegally.

(That said, I do think we need immigration reform — but not amnesty for those who are here. You do not reward bad behavior.)
