Hispanic Heritage Month: Win Eight Free Books
Tonight I will be putting on pumps and perfume and shaking it with Latinos of all flavors at a local Hispanic Heritage Month fiestecita. Oh, colorful Nashville of 2008 I love you so much better than Nashville of 1991.
As I celebrate, here's how I'm helping you get your Latin on:
The good people at Hachette Book Group USA are giving Bilingual in the Boonies readers up to five sets of eight wonderful books that celebrate the Hispanic experience. The group, which includes Grand Central (formerly Warner Books) and my beloved Little, Brown and Company, has printed several books that capture the Latino experience.
On the giveaway list are books about Puerto Ricans in Chicago, Chicanos, Cubans in Union City, Tex-Mex in Brownsville, pre-revolutionary Mexico and Pancho Villa. There is reality and fantasy. The group most recently published Dream in Color, by sisters Linda Sanchez and Loretta Sanchez, both of whom are congresswomen from California.
To win a set all you have to do is read the rules below and post a comment, telling me your favorite Spanish word. I personally pick: refunfuñosa.
The more comments, the more sets get shipped out. Tell your friends.
And even if you don't win, there are some awesome books here to add to your reading list.
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
Here are the books:

My favorite spanish word is mariposa because Elena loves to say it and never says 'butterfly' anymore.
Candela is my favorite Spanish word because it accurately describes my nena. And she looks good in the Los Pollitos Dicen Shirt BTW!
love this! my favorite word is "añoranza"... because it sums up my bilingual/bicultural experience perfectly.
My favourite Spanish phrase is 'porque sí'. Why? Porque sí ;o)
PS I know I can't win as I'm in England but wanted to comment! And it'll be another comment towards the first set of books!
Mi palabra favorita es "amor" por que amo la cultura Hispana!
Alborotada - because I usually am, and because mi'ja is always alborotando algo.
cacahuate, just because it's fun to say (and eat!)
although a close second is hearing my little 16-mo old gringa say "oh-wa" (hola). :)
Hi Carrie!
My favorite Spanish word is: despampanante
It's such a colorful adjective ... and fun to say!
I wish you well :) Melek
"La pluma es la lengua del alma."~ Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
mine is: "un chín" or "un chín chín"
it's Dominicans way of saying
"un poco" or "un poquito"
and it's and expression thought to have native indian roots.
My favorite word is NO because that's what I usually say when I get these crazy requests to send chain letters in Spanish!
My favorite word is ojalá. I love the origin of the word as well as what it expresses.
Espero verte esta noche!
wow i'd love to win bless me ultima and the rest of those books so i can read them!
my favorite spanish word is arcoiris
i'm not sure if i spelled that right i'm not a good speller in spanish
i'm hispanic, parents are mexican and am very fluent in spanish, you'd think i'd be good at spelling but nooo hehe : ) ay muchas otras palabras que me gustan pero mi favorita si es arcoiris : )
Traqueteo, the singular form of traquetear, as in "Each night, Penelope forma un traqueteo de madre as we try to put her in bed."
My favorite hispanic word is FUACATA. Is a word so versatile taht you can use it for many different meanings.
For example
If you burn the frijoles just say FUACATA. I you spill a glass of water just say FUACATA. If someone shows up unexpectantly just say FUACATA. If you're been bodered bya salesman, just say FUACATA.
Is a word that is so versatile.
Yes FUACATA is my hispanic word of choice.
And when you're done just say FUACATA.
Oh, I'm having such a hard time coming up with my favorite word! (I'm going to blame this on the two pitchers of sangria I just split with a couple of friends.) But I love the words that your readers have chosen, and I love that this post has brought out your commenters in droves.
I'm going to go with "recórcholis," because as a kid it cracked me up that on cartoons and in comic books the heroes were always using phrases like "¡Recórcholis!" ""¡Caray!" or "¡Rayos y centellas!, when no one I knew actually used these phrases in real life.
(Of course, I did learn to swear like a veritable sailor at a very early age from my Latina mother.)
My favorite Spanish phrase is "Ay Dios mio!" because I just love the way my daughter says it every time she gives me a hug. ;)

My favorite spanish phrase is "no se, pero bueno" because my cuban mother in law says it all the time after telling long stories.
whoops! I forgot my e-mail. hope I didn't mess anything up!
[email protected]
My favorite word is "apretaste" because it's only one word, but is when somebody does something really well, like saying "way to go!"
¡Apretaste!
[email protected]
Siesta, because I can never get enough.
While there are many favorites, I really enjoy the phrase "meterse con alquien" because you get such a great visual.
Mine is "uno," which is what I named one of my childhood cats because she was the only kitten in the litter. (It wasn't my favourite before that cat, though, so the special part is the memory rather than the word.)
Alyssa's fave is Hola!
My fave is chica.
So we say Hola! Chica!
Javier Bardem!
there you have it.
my favorite spanish words!
It's hard to just pick ONE word/phrase! There are soo many! I'm gonna go with "Patatú" {Le dio un "patatú" y se murió}.
Saludos,
Mariel

Vacilon.
As in: "Bilingual in the Boonies es tremendo vacilon!
My favorite word is pin,pan,pum...but then again I don't think that is really a Spanish word in the Castillian sense, more like a slang/modismo/cubaneo.
(means cot bed, since you open it and it goes pin, pan, pum.. ready to sleep)
I would have to say " Caballero, eso no pasaba en Cuba" that is a very good phrase, quite ubiquitous in Miami.
Rebenton, fiesta,huateque all meaning party!
Alright to many words and phrases.. It just that I really want the books
My favorite Spanish phrase is Muy bien! My son is learning Spanish phrases to which I LOVE saying muy bien!
Gosh, I have so many favorites, having been raised by a Puerto Rican and a Gallego. And to add to that, my Cuban husband. Entre, ostia, conio y que pinga, they make up my daily vocabulary. ha! But one that I'm known to say quite a bit is 'ave maria' and I usually say it cantando like the boriquas. This is fun...
My favorite word is "jerga" wich sounds dirty but is 100% clean and means "slang" (in Peruvian Spanish).
And my favorite phrase has to be "no se toca" ("don't touch"), which has been drilled in my kids brains since they were old enough to listen to Papa's reprimands.
Thanks, Carrie!
Cesar
My favorite spanish phrase is "le patina el coco"....because it is such a descriptive way to say someone is loco!
"Mariposa" is my favorite Spanish word, but it's hard to work into any conversation since I can't remember my Spanish verbs. I love the way it sounds, I love butterflies, and I always know that I am using the correct Spanish word. So, I'm like a child when I see a butterfly and I excitedly say (loudly) "mariposa" because I always know I've remembered it right.
Just one phrase! Ack! I like chicharrones y salchichas... both are great fun to say, and gross me out a little. Also, I've been saying, "no me digas eso" this week, just for fun...
Also, here's a silly chiste: How do you spell nose in Spanish? No sé...Ja, ja, ja, ja!
[email protected]
What a great idea!
My favorite Spanish word is 'tolete' and 'ño!'
My favorite phrase is 'que barbaro' and 'le ronca la carabina de ambrosio'
My kids and I think "rompope" (a kind of eggnog in Mexico) is a fun word.
BTW, love your blog!
En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espiritu Santo ... gracias al Senor.
I've got a better one. Corazon de melon. That's what my abuelita always called me:)
BTW, this is fun! I've been thinking of fabulous Spanish phrases all weekend. Thanks, Carrie:)
Oooh, this is tough now since my first pick, fuacata, has already been taken. I'm going to go with "Fulano" or "Fulanito" - growing up I always thought it as actually someone's name! It cracks me up everytime.
I'll offer up my favorite phrase even though you're not asking because it was the first thing to come to mind after fuacata - comiendo lo que pica el pollo - mi mami is famous for that one!
I have a favorite phrase at this moment-"Te Amo" because that is what my 16 month old hija says whenever she sees me!
My favorite spanish word is mañana. Because THAT's when everything seems to get done around here...
Right now my favorite Spanish word is "prójimo" - as in, "Love your prójimo."
MY favorite spanish phrase is "Que sera, sera." We sing it in the rocking chair every night and both my anglo babies we're requesting it with "sera please" at 18 months.
I think I'm too late, but here it is:
casuelero
As in, my friend's husband is tremendo casuelero.
LOL
"El tibiri tabara"
"Mancafu"
"Pire"
One of my favorite phrases in Spanish is also typically Cuban: "Se lo comió!"
I'll let you translate that one.
My favorite word is "penultima". I don't know why - I just love it!
My favorite Spanish phrase is
mi corazon when referring to someone you love. I just think that is such a beautiful way of saying I love you.
My favorite spanish word is "mijo", because I learned it while my son was playing soccer with his hispanic friends. Even now that he is all grown up, the softness and tenderness of that word sticks with me.
Saludos from Puerto Rico. My favorite word is "Ay Bendito" and the phrase "Se te quiere de gratis".
caramba
